How social determinants of health are affecting under-served populations in our community, from the experts

EPISODE #57 | 9:30 AM Monday, July 12, 2021
National Recovery Month and the Capital City Campaign for Recovery
GUEST | David Mays, D.C. Recovery Community Alliance (DCRCA) Outreach Coordinator

Join popular WJNI Gospel Radio host Terry Base, Garcia Williams, executive director of The Medi, and David Mays, D.C. Recovery Community Alliance’s (DCRCA) Outreach Coordinator for a conversation about National Recovery Month and the Capital City Campaign for Recovery.  National Recovery Month is an international observance held every September to educate people about how substance use and mental health services can enable individuals and their families to live healthy and rewarding lives. This observance celebrates the millions of people in recovery from mental health and substance use issues, reminding us that behavioral health is an essential component to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can, and do, recover.

The Medi Community Resource Center, The Medical Home Development Group and the Psychiatric Institute of Washington are founding members of the Partners in Care Network.  The mission of  the Partners in Care Network is to advocate for policy to support recovery, create connections to supportive services that are vital and life-saving, and to engage affected individuals in meaningful civic action. The initiative convenes local peer recovery advocates with lived experience to build capacity for organized civic engagement with new leadership across the metro area.

Listen in to learn:

1. How is The Medi supporting community treatment providers addressing treatment and recovery support?

2. What is the Partners in Care Network?
3. What is the Capital City Campaign for Recovery, and how can you get involved?
4. Why is stigma a barrier to addiction treatment and recovery?
5. Define Substance Abuse Disorder (SUD) how does it differ from addiction?
7. What is recovery and treatment and why is this continuum of care important?

"The impact on our community is devastating, and has been further impacted by the COVID pandemic and the forced quarantine needed to insure our safety," says Mr. Mays .  He shares his personal testimony of his journey in recovery and provides insights on what we can and must do as an active part of the community of supporters.

Tune in every 2nd Monday morning at 9:30am to WJNI 106.3 FM or https://radio.securenetsystems.net/v5/WJNI and you can also down the WJNI Gospel App from the App Store, for a new, local conversation about the social determinants of health and how they're affecting under-served populations, with information and experts that can't be found anywhere else.
