EPISODE #45 | 9:30 AM Monday, March 29, 2021
Smoking prevention among people of color
Guest: Dr. Phillip Gardiner, co-chair, African American Tobacco Control Council

Join popular WJNI radio host Terry Base, The Medi's Garcia Williams, and Dr. Phillip S. Gardiner, co-chair and co-founder of the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council, for a conversation about the social determinants of health! On Monday morning, Dr. Gardiner will discuss how partners like The Medi and community leaders are making a difference in the lives of those who are disproportionately affected by the use and sale of tobacco products, along with strategies under development to support prevention efforts and pending bills in the South Carolina Legislature to address the impact on communities of color.

Dr. Gardiner is a public health activist, administrator, evaluator, and researcher who has worked for 25 years on studies relating to hypertension, multiculturalism, AIDS, breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, and smoking. He has lectured around the country for the past 20 years on the topic of African American health disparities and menthol smoking in the Black community.

He recently retired as the senior program officer for the Tobacco Related Disease Research Program of the University of California Office of the President, a position he had held since 1997. He is currently the co-chair of the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council, a group of Black professionals dedicated to fighting the scourge of tobacco impacting African American communities both in California and nationally.

Tune in every Monday morning to WJNI 106.3 FM or https://onlineradiobox.com/us/wjni/ for a new, local conversation about the social determinants of health and how they're affecting under-served populations, with information and experts that can't be found anywhere else.
